After collaborating with a clothing brand where he introduced the sustainability dimension, Bruno, the brand’s founder, launched his own bed and bath linen brand at the end of 2016, by integrating this dimension into his home textile project, making Kalani one of the leading organic and ethical bed linen brands in Europe. The whole collection, wonderfully comfortable, high-end and made of 100% organic cotton, meets these strict criteria and certifications in terms of source materials (100% organic and Fairtrade cotton), ethics (the work of farmers and artisans is remunerated fairly and their working conditions controlled) and environmental footprint.
FAIR TRADE ﹣ What makes your brand Fair Trade and how do you ensure the Fair Trade production?
Since the start of the brand, we have taken a holistic approach that integrates social criteria into our products, choices and actions. We have chosen our manufacturing plants carefully by going on site to meet them several times. These factories, like us, are Fairtrade and Organic certified and are managed with respect and ethics. This ensures that employees and workers in these factories enjoy fair working conditions and are paid accordingly, all verified by regular SA 8000 audits. We are internationally committed to paying a higher price for each kilo of cotton purchased.
SOCIAL JUSTICE ﹣ How do you ensure Social Justice with your internal and external corporate environment?
Our factories are family companies on a human scale where the workers have been working for many years in compliance with the 8 social criteria of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Products made from Fairtrade cotton, from cooperatives of small producers at a fair price.
ORGANIC ﹣ Please list all ORGANIC materials you work with. What makes this material sustainable and better than conventional material?
By choosing to produce 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, we guarantee that our production has no harmful impact on the health of farming communities and their neighbours. The GOTS standard is the only one that guarantees that the fibres, fabrics and products have not been produced and dyed with any product that is harmful to the environment and to the health of users and workers. Dyeing plants treat and clean all the effluent waters before any eventual release to the environment. In the factories we work with, 100% of the products are dyed and finished in the most sustainable way possible.
LOCAL ﹣ Where and why is your entire product collection produced locally?
Our Luxury Towels & bath linen factory is local in Belgium. Founded in 1953, our organic Luxury bath linen factory is the European market leader for bath linen.
ZERO WASTE ﹣ Which processes in your supply chain are zero waste?
When preparing orders We do not send plastic to our customers. Production plastic packaging, to protect the products from humidity and dust in the warehouse, are carefully unpacked and recycled by our warehouse. Our warehouse can recycle up to 10 different types of waste, while private individuals are limited. Afterwards, our logistics operators carefully wrap the products in FSC®-certified tissue paper. Shipping is done in recycled and recyclable cardboard boxes, the interstices of which are filled with recycled and recyclable twisted paper.
VEGAN ﹣ How you can ensure that your entire product collection is Vegan? If vegan-approved by a recognized organization such as PETA or Vegan Society, please name them.
100% of the products are Vegan, PETA-Approved (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)
