We met Amaya Ducru Clouthier and Ines Olaechea, the co-founders of the new 85° concept store, at their launch party in Paris. The beautiful store focuses only on Mexican and South American Brands and products that point out the love for art. We were curious to learn more about the 85° concept store and asked them some questions below.

Interview With The Founders Of 85° Paris
Tell me about your ethical store 85° Paris…
85° Paris is a concept store and brand incubator working with conscious latin-American designers. Our first concept store is a space where we wanted to bring Latin American luxury craftsmanship together with the French exceptional art of perfume with the Quintessence Paris brand who works on scented candles, a new line of eco-responsible perfumes and other collaborative pieces, such as the Trapunto tea light holder, designed by Guillaume Delvigne in biscuit porcelain. This is the beautiful white piece in the image below. We focus on shining light on great design, noble materials, and a balance between tradition and innovation in very high-quality products. This means most of our designers work in an artisanal manner or in small studios, each as a mission of their own. Our aim is to influence the idea of Latin America as a rich and creative region worldwide, perfectly anchoring itself in the “New Luxury” idea.
Why do you focus on South American and Mexican brands?
Ines and Amaya, the founders, are both half French, half Latin American: Ines from Peru and Amaya from Mexico. Growing up between Paris and different cultures has allowed us to understand and develop a very strong connection with our American side, having a unique eye on our cultures and sensibilities. We have always had a fascination for the warmth, know-how, and discourse of the Peruvian or Mexican designers that we encountered. This always resulted in feeling they should be present in the European market, for others to know and see and enjoy too.
Which brands do you carry?
We have a few fixed brands and others that we rotate. To give you a few: Artesano, Nannacay, Mercedes Salazar, Gala is Love, Ayni, Sophie Simone, Xaquixe, Onora, Marika Vera, Zii Ropa, Makaua.
How do you select your brands?
The process starts with our gut feelings and love. We have to love the pieces and feel a connection with the brand. Then, of course, there is an aesthetic line we have as a concept store, and we have to respect it. We look into the production processes, the materials, the pricing, the sustainable or ethical programs the designer works with, etc. And of course, they have to be conceived by Latin American designers, or based in Latin America, or having a strong influence on the area’s development.
Do you host any events at your store with designers or founders?
We love hosting, being open and being sociable. Every month we host an event with a guest brand, as well as 3-4 times a year host a presentation of a collection, sometimes when we can with the designer present. The founders are always there, we really believe in accessibility and making personal connections.
Is there a South American or Mexican artwork you like the most?
85° loves art and we are slowly moving toward artist collaborations, so I could give you so many! We love the wit and humor of Mexican graphic designer Alejandro Magallanes. He is most known for his book covers, posters, and illustrations, but also develops identities for brands and organizations and produces an amazing universe of artwork.
